Model Shoot. Behind the Scenes and More…

Since I’m not exactly a studio photographer, I wanted to get some training and took a two-day workshop at LA Photography School. It was greally good and very productive. I am no expert on this in just 6 hours, but I defintely loved getting behind the scenes perspective and having my own way with these images and everything that was happening around me. We had three models, two makeup artists, and many different light setups. This is what I picked out to send to the model. Some of these images are my favorites of all time.

Los Angeles City Lights

Last year I was near the airport shooting the planes and I was very distracted by all the light around me. Everything seemed flashing and moving… but still in perfect harmony. It was not about the geometry or composition, but raher about the mix of colors created by cars, street light, and Christmas decorations. All of these photos were taken from almost the same spot. I think they will look very cool on a huge wall in a modern house. It was fun experimenting like this and finding new themes and challenges.

Elements. Summer 2012

It’s almost been a year since I started experimenting with this concept of showing motion of the nature and creating abstract photos capturing the combo of movement and moment in time. This summer I wanted to see if I can get better shots at the same location as where I started this whole project. I could definitely see that it’s easier to know how to set everything up and exactly how to frame shots. I like these shots not just for the color and the lines (things that attract me most in any photo), but also the lightness of them …

Smoke. Want some tea?

I love shooting something that is not staged. I like the thrill of finding rather than creating. Maybe it’s just a passing stage or maybe it’s just they way I am with my cameras. In Russia, we have a deep love for tea. In the 18th and 19th centuries, and I’m sure even before that, people make tea the special way. The tradition is still alive, but it’s not the popular way to make tea these days. At the country house, we were making tea the old way and I absolutely loved the smoke. Here are a few of the …

Foreigners. New series

Last weekend at the country house, my friend and I were going for a long walk and I wanted to shoot something special. I decided to focus on trees a lot and I noticed that some don’t really look like Russian trees (in my opinion). So for a little under three hrs and miles of walking we were looking at the trees and figuring out if they look foreign or not. It was a lot of fun! I’m pretty sure anyone looking at us would say we’re insane! Foreigners.. But I feel like these beatiful trees fully deserve a look …

FLRS Series. Beginning.

The day before I posted best photos from my shoot last weekend. Towards the end of my shoot the weather got even worse and I got some interesting effect on white flowers and a dark background that looks really dark on the photos. While reviewing the results, I decided I need to explore this idea more. That gave the start to my new series called “FLRS”. The images are not processed in Photoshop and all there is is some tone editing on most photos. I love the effect this rainy weather gave me and the photos that I took. It’s …

Russian Nature. Inner Ansel Adams.

Living near Yosemite and getting familiar with the work of Ansel Adams definitely had an impact on me. I like the old school of photography, the BW captures, no Photoshop.. This weekend, stuck in 4hr traffic on the way to my country house, I wanted to do something differently. I like shooting my Elements series, but I felt like I need to try something new for a change as well. It’s been my reality check to try to find something new to shoot there since I visit this place every year in summer and always have my camera with me. …

Venice Beach

When you live in LA, it’s natural to consider many things for granted. It’s raining in Russia for the past three weeks and I was going through my happy sunny photos and decided to share some of them with you. Venice Beach is a very popular place in Los Angeles. There are a lot of people at any time of the day and nobody is really worried how they look. Everyone is there to have a good time. On the weekend when I rented a 70-200 mm $2500 Canon lens, I took it to the beach to see what will …

Loyola Marymount University in photos

After getting done with my undergraduate business degree I was eager to go to the place I’ve always wanted to call home – Los Angeles. I guess one of the reasons for that is the similarity between Moscow and LA, at least in size and amount of things you can do. LA has obvious advantages in all the beaches, shopping, concerts, and accessibility to almost any place in the US. In short, it’s an ideal city for me. I had to figure out what to do with my life and I decided to get a Masters degree. In part it …

Russian dinner

Last weekend we went to the countryside with pretty much all of my relatives. It was going to be a great weekend regardless the rainy weather. I was shooting more for my elements series on Friday and some more on Saturday. When it was time to grill the meat, I was stoked to see some amazing patterns in the flames and ran for my camera to capture them. I got a few good shots out of it, but I was more happy documenting the process of making food. We were drinking wine and standing in the rain grilling the pork. …

Walking around in Hollywood

Living in Los Angeles definitely has its advantages. One of these is being able to be around a variety of people in one of the most famous places in the world, Hollywood Star Walk. I was amazed at the mix of characters and people from all over the world. Traffic there never stops and it’s one of the most visited places in the world. I rented a 70-200mm L Canon lens and decided to test it there. I can’t say it was the right decision (people hated having a huge lens in their faces), but I got some nice images …

Planes in Motion: LAX Landing

I saw some amazing plane photos online and it inspired me to go out and shoot some myself. And since I live 15 minutes away from LAX in Los Angeles, I definitely had an advantage in that. As I am currently working on my ‘Elements’ series, which is abstract nature in motion, I decided to experiment the same way with the planes. I think it adds the significance and dominance to these planes. It’s a scary feeling when these huge machines pass 50 feet above you and land almost right behind you. The little jets are not a big deal, …

Bayphoto Metal Prints Review

As a photographer, I always try to find the best places to print my photos and figure out the best sizes and paper types. A few weeks ago I was watchingthe¬† online video that described the way Peter Lik prints images. This summer, when I was in Russia, I went to an exhibition where some of the photos were printed not on the regular paper, but on some material that gave the unusual glow to the images. So finally last week I figured out that these were very similar printing techniques, and I wanted to try and see how my …

Photo Rental Services – First Impressions

I used to think that any lens would work with a good camera. We now just starting out, spending $250 on a new lens seemed like a lot to me. And in fact, if you just want to learn how to take good photos, it is not necessary to spend huge amounts of money on the equipment. On the opposite, it will force you to work better as a photographer, compose your shots, pick better angles, get closer to your objects, and manage the light. I remember the days on I used to have my 50-250 mm lens and I …

Summer wind: abstract nature photography

This summer I wanted to do some shooting. Usually it happens this way: I don’t take photos for a while, I feel guilty because of that or suddenly get inspired by something, and go out to the streets with the camera. Just to let you know right away, this kind of shooting (street photography) is very exhausting, at least to me. If I have 2-3 days in a row, I need the whole week to rest after. Post processing and image selection take time. Currently I don’t use Photoshop in my images. Lightroom does a perfect work for me and …
