Beach Fitness

“The last three or four reps is what makes the muscle grow. This area of pain divides a champion from someone who is not a champion.”

– Arnold Schwarzenegger

The idea for this series was to combine the beach culture of Southern California with the geometry and physique of the human body. I was mesmerized by beach volleyball and Santa Monica areal rings. The community for both is insanely friendly and I could spend hours watching from close and afar and finding interesting angles and playing with the shadows.

This series was one of my shortest in time span. I only spent 3 months working on it and so far haven’t returned to it. It was the time in my life when I was finishing Shapers series work and felt very energized to photograph more and more unique activities around Los Angeles.

Beach fitness seemed like the perfect fit. As you probably noticed by now, almost all of my photo series revolve around an unusual look at Los Angeles – ballet, shapers, LAX, surf. Desert is the only outlier in this group, but still only a few hours away from the city.

You don’t need to spend money to exercise. The beach is always available here. Take your shoes off, feel the sand on your toes, and exercise all the 26 joints in your feet.
