Los Angeles is quite a unique place with the airport landing path going over residential areas for miles and miles. As all the incoming aircrafts get closer to the landing strip, you can stand literally right above them.
Some planes are small and don’t seem that intimidating. But once you experience having a two-story Airbus open up wheel compartments for landing right above you and feel the vibration of this gigantic piece of machinery in the sky 300-400 feet above you, you lose your ability to speak.
The first time I had that experience, I had to stay silent for a few minutes to process what just happened to me. I didn’t see it coming it was so fast.
I felt the air buzzing around me. I looked up and saw giant wheels and this bright off white belly of a plane above me. It looked like a giant aluminum construction is passing over me sounding like a rock concert that lasts seconds.
At that moment I knew I was hooked. On being around the planes in the air this close. On capturing them in the air. On focusing on their details. I knew the schedule or arrivals, I knew the airlines by the colors of the belly and the tail. I could tell what city the aircrafts are taking off to as I saw them turn in the sky already miles away in the air. It was love. And so this series was born.
