Elements of Nature

“Live in each season as it passes; breathe the air, drink the drink, taste the fruit, and resign yourself to the influence of the earth.”

– Henry David Thoreau

I used to go on these beach walk in Manhattan Beach, one of the nicest coastal areas in Los Angeles. It was the place where I’d go to photograph surfers at El Porto Beach and at the pier too. Both are essentially hugging the walking path I’d take to get from one end to another.

As I was making my way, I was mesmerized by the variety of garden plants, and I didn’t want to just capture them still. So I decided to go with more motion and see how I can create abstract art out of these beautiful colorful plants.

I took hundreds of photos of the same plants, always looking for the most in-the-moment eye-pleasing shapes and shades. Some days I’d focus on a specific color – red or green. Some days I’d go and explore palm tree trunks. It was always a quest to bring something new home. Even the same palm tree would look all kinds of different in every new exploration, in new lighting of the day, in different motion of my hands.

This is the most abstract series I’ve created so far. Nature is always in motion. Nothing is ever fully still. This series is a play on that.
